The Chicago Cubs are in second place in the National League Central Division, 1.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals. Although the Cubs started the season impressively enough for fans and commentators to wonder aloud whether this might be a World Series year for them, they have lost seven of the last 10 games and are leaving Cubs’ fans biting their fingernails. It has been 100 years since the Cubs last won a World Series.
The Cubs won Saturday’s game against the Cardinals 9-3. That game saw Ted Lilly pitch his 1000th career strike-out. He went on to fan two more batters and ended the game with 1002 career strike-outs. He helped himself to his win by getting a double, only the second extra-base hit of his career.
Ken Lohse took the loss for the Cardinals in that game, breaking a streak of wins for his last seven decisions. He faced 10 batters in the fourth inning and allowed eight of the Cubs’ nine runs.
The Cardinals took it back on Sunday, though, beating the Cubs5-3. Todd Wellemeyer got the win against the team that drafted him and brought him up to the Major Leagues. Wellemeyer is 3-1 this season.
