Atlanta Braves Tidbits

August 5, 2008

Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann has returned to the line-up after missing seven days because of a mild concussion suffered when he collided with Philadelphia’s Shane Victorino on the field. He went 0-for-3 on Monday as the San Francisco Giants beat the Braves 4-2.

Chipper Jones is hoping to return to the line-up on Friday. Jones has been on the 15-day DL with a strained hamstring. The Braves are 6-17 in games in which Jones has not been in the line-up.

Jair Jurrjens has lost 4 of 6 but still leads the team with a 3.12 ERA

And the team is still stunned by the unexpected death of their long-time announcer, Skip Caray.

Altanta Braves — Local Boy Makes Good

August 1, 2008

A local boy made good for the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Catcher Clint Sammons, who was called up from Triple-A Richmond on Monday, hit his first major league home run and drove in three runs to help lift the Braves 9-4 over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Raised in suburban Atlanta, Sammons was a high school classmate of one of the Braves’ other homegrown players, Jeff Francoeur. He played with the University of Georgia.

He was called up to replace yet another Atlanta native, Brian McCann, who is out with a minor concussion.

Sammons’ contributions helped to end the Braves’ five-game losing streak. It was a nice lift for Atlanta’s morale after several disappointing events. Besides McCann’s concussion, Tim Hudson is scheduled for season-ending surgery, Chipper Jones is on the DL and Mark Teixeira has been traded to the Los Angeles Angels.
